This standard applies to Temperature Actuated, Flow Reduction (TAFR) Valves for Individual Fixtures Fittings which react to high temperature water. These valves reduce flow to 0.95 L/min (0.25 GPM) or less automatically in response to outlet temperatures greater than a preset actuation temperature not to exceed 49°C (120°F) so as to limit exposure to high temperature water discharge from an individual fixture fitting.
Description- Devices covered by this standard shall be mechanically or electrically operated, shall be installed in-line with or integrated into fixture fittings; and after actuation, shall reset open automatically or use a manual reset mechanism. Actuation temperature shall be set not to exceed the requirements of 37°F to 180°F. Temperature of the water is sensed downstream of the hot and cold water mixing valve(s). If the water temperature exceeds the actuation temperature, the device closes, reducing outlet flow so as not to exceed the requirement of Section 0.95 L/min (0.25 GPM). When the water temperature has cooled to less than the actuation temperature, but equal or greater than the minimum requirement of Section 54°C (129°F), the device shall reset open. Sizes of the devices covered by this standard are 25 mm (1 inch NPS) or smaller.
Flow Rates Before Actuation
- When the device is integrated into a fixture fitting, the flow rate of the assembly prior to actuation shall be in accordance with ASME/ANSI A112.18.1M.
- For devices not integrated into a fixture fitting, but that are to be used with a fixture fitting that has a specified minimum flow rate in the ASME/ANSI A112.18.1M Standard, the minimum flow rate prior to actuation shall be at least 1.9 L/min (0.5 GPM) greater than the applicable ASME/ANSI A112.18.1M requirement. If the device is to be used with a fixture fitting that has a specified maximum flow, no maximum flow requirement shall be met unless the device is used to limit flow.
Flow Rates After Actuation
- After actuation, the reduced flow rate at 552 kPa (80 p.s.i.) shall not exceed 0.95 L/min (0.25 GPM)
- The working temperature range of the devices covered by this standard is 3°C to 82°C (37°F to 180°F). Upon reaching an actuating temperature of 49°C (120°F) or its rated actuating temperature, whichever is less, the flow shall be reduced to 552 kPa (80 p.s.i.), within five (5) seconds. Upon reaching a minimum actuating temperature of 54°C (129°F), the flow shall be reduced to 552 kPa (80 p.s.i.) within one (1) second. After actuation, the reset open temperature shall be not less than 32°C (90°F).
